Introduction to Weight

Obesity is described as a fat accumulation of more than 20% of the body weight and is associated with potential health hazards such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. It is often difficult to pinpoint the exact reason behind excess weight or loss and this is and therefore, a holistic approach (body, mind, soul) is required to determine the root cause of these symptoms.

There can be a complex combination of varied physical, psychological and social factors responsible for obesity including genetic factors, a sedentary lifestyle, slow BMR (body metabolic rate), water retention and accumulation of toxins in the body. Stress and psychological factors, such as depression also play a major role in weight gain.

Our mind and body do not work in isolation; the mind has a direct impact on our eating habits and our physical well being. A holistic approach heals not just the body but addresses imbalances in the mind which are contributory. It is as important to address the emotional issues and detox your mind of all negative energy as it is to detox your body of all the toxins.

Physical Aspect to Weight Gain & Loss

Weight Gain

In order to understand why we gain weight, and why it’s so hard to lose it, we need to understand how our bodies use and store food. There are 3 fuel sources that we can use for energy—carbohydrates, protein, and fats.

We can store up to about 3 days worth of carbohydrates as glycogen in our liver and muscles but our fat storage capacity is unlimited. Once our glycogen stores are full, the excess carbohydrates consumed get stored as fat. Insulin (from our pancreas) is our main fat storage hormone which supports this process.

Every excess sugar molecule in the body is combined with a fatty acid molecule to form a triglyceride (three fat molecules and one sugar molecule) with the aid of insulin and gets stored in our fat cells. The higher insulin goes, the more fat gets stored.

Weight Loss

Sudden, noticeable weight loss can happen after a stressful event, although it can also be a sign of a serious illness. Your body weight can regularly fluctuate, but the persistent, unintentional loss of more than 5% of your weight over 6 to 12 months is usually a cause for concern. Losing this much weight can be a sign of malnutrition, where a person’s diet doesn’t contain the right amount of nutrients or the body isn’t absorbing the nutrients it is consuming.

Weight loss can result from a decrease in body fluid, muscle mass, or fat. Other causes of weight loss include, but are not limited to, cancer, viral infection (such as CMV or HIV), gastroenteritis, parasite infection, depression, bowel diseases, and overactive thyroid.

If we are unable to gain weight at all this may be attributable to a fast metabolic rate and even an overactive thyroid which again needs assessing holistically in order to get to the root cause.

Emotional and Spiritual Aspect to Weight Gain & Loss

There can be many different emotional aspects to weight gain and loss which need to be explored with each person to understand their story. In summary, there is often a theme of lack and the more luck you have, the more you fill up with food to compensate.

Food when consumed during challenging times they can release positive endorphins into the body. The challenging times are often caused by influential people not meeting the emotional needs of an individual. These needs were met with rejection, abuse or hostility. As a result, these needs are met by food, self-punishment or rejection. This may be because of a positive association with food when the person needed love, safety, support or abundance. This only provides a short term solution and the need to eat more food is required to reinforce the happy state. By eating certain foods, the need for love and comfort was met by a positive endorphin release.

Weight gain can also be attributed to an underactive thyroid; this is often linked to carrying a lot of emotional baggage within a person. In many cases, there is a great need to protect oneself from experiencing any further emotional pain. Themes around this can be believing you have too many shortcomings in life, that you will always fail. Believing that you will never have enough of what you need in life.

Another theme that emerges is a person may feel a great deal of anger and rage for being where they are in life. The anger is a result of feeling powerless and helpless. The person may not feel they have what it takes. This can also show as feeling like a victim of circumstances.

Clearing Emotional Trauma in order to heal the body

All emotions are linked to belief systems, which are in turn linked to events/memories that have been experienced in our life. We may not be aware of them but they are there in our subconscious mind working in the background wanting to be addressed and released.

Techniques such as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Matrix Reimprinting are very powerful tools in helping work with these emotions or traumatic memories by clearing the energy behind them. Once the energy has been cleared health returns to the body.
